Now here’s another reason to love spring – roller skating in Newcastle is about to be the city’s newest craze, and that’s a promise!

This spring, roller skating in Newcastle takes centre stage with the launch of Skate Island at Newcastle Racecourse.

Running for eight weeks from 2 April, the event promises giant roller rinks, themed disco nights, student specials, family-friendly sessions, and a buzzing food and drink village.

Delivered in partnership with North East-based events company EVNT Inspirations, Skate Island is bringing something completely new to the region. The company already has a strong relationship with Newcastle Racecourse, having staged their popular pop-up pub on major race days.

A Giant Roller Rink and Themed Disco Nights

At the heart of Skate Island is a giant roller-skating rink, where participants of all ages can enjoy everything from student nights to immersive retro disco experiences. Fridays will be dedicated to themed roller disco nights. Each of them will offer a unique atmosphere and opportunity to dress up, skate, and sing along.

The Friday night themes include:

  • 3 April – Rodeo Roller Disco (country music fans)
  • 10 April – Karaoke Roller Disco (lyrics on giant screens for sing-alongs)
  • 17 April – Neon Rave Roller Disco (90s dance and rave classics)
  • 24 April – Date and Skate (for single skaters)
  • 1 May – R&B Night
  • 8 May – Indie Roller Disco
  • 15 May – Girl Power Night
  • 22 May – Karaoke returns
  • 29 May – Rodeo Roller Disco finale

Thursdays are reserved for student nights, offering a fun, affordable evening out. Saturday mornings will cater to families with sessions from 9 am to noon.

From midday onwards, Retro Roller takes over. It will be a fully immersive disco roller experience celebrating the golden era of roller skating.

Sundays are an all-day family affair, running from 9am until 9pm, making Skate Island one of the most inclusive roller skating in Newcastle experiences to date.

Food, Drink, and Flexible Skating

Alongside the rink, visitors can enjoy a vibrant food and drink village. It will feature pop-up bars and the region’s favourite street food traders. Every ticket includes a 90-minute roller-skating slot with skate hire, but guests are welcome to stay longer to enjoy the full atmosphere.

Ticket prices start from £7.50 for family sessions, £10 for student nights, and £15 for Retro Roller or themed Friday events, plus booking fees. Tickets go on sale at 10am on Tuesday 17 February, with pre-sale access available from 10am on Monday 16 February. Early sign-ups also have the chance to win free tickets and receive priority booking.

Stuart Nurse, co-director of EVNT Inspirations, said:

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the response online so far – thousands have signed up for pre-sale tickets already. Skate Island is all about bringing back the heyday of roller disco, and we can’t wait to see Newcastle enjoying roller skating in Newcastle like never before.”

Paul Elliott, Executive Director of Newcastle Racecourse, added:

“Partnering with EVNT Inspirations on Skate Island is hugely exciting. It’s the perfect way to showcase the racecourse as one of the North East’s top multi-purpose venues, offering something completely new for visitors this spring.”
