With 14 February fast-approaching, it’s time to finally answer the question – is Valentine’s Day a marketing scam?
I did think about going the traditional route – writing up a lovely Valentine’s Day round up for you all. You know, things to do, places to visit, restaurants to dine at. But a quick Google search shows that the majority of North East publications have already covered this.
So here I am, taking a different approach – writing an op-ed about the age-old debate: Is Valentine’s Day a marketing scam?
I recently put up a poll on both my own and Spectrum’s Instagram stories, asking this very question. A hard-hitting 90% of you answered yes.

So, is it a scam?
As for me? I feel conflicted about Valentine’s Day. Having studied and lived in the world of media and entertainment, I know for a fact that it’s a marketing scam – just like any other National Day. I mean, National Pie Day? Really?
And it doesn’t stop there! We have National Ice Cream Day (hint: go and spend your money at local ice cream parlours), National Grilled Cheese Day (hint: go and spend your money at local brunch spots), National Whiskey Day (hint: go and spend your money at a local bar). So why not have an international day for love?
Say no to Consumerism!

I admit, life can get boring and mundane sometimes. You get comfortable, you put in a little less effort. So maybe Valentine’s Day is a nice excuse to remember to appreciate each other. I like the sound of that.
However, do we really need fancy restaurants, massive teddy bears that are almost as tall as you and overpriced gifts? No. You can show appreciation for that special someone by complimenting them, spending quality time together, writing a heartfelt love letter and simply being present – together, enjoying the moment.
Life is all about the little things, and it’s those little things that make it better. So this year, I encourage you all not to give in to consumerism but instead to remember what truly matters on 14 February.
Love and be loved – because isn’t that the best feeling of all?
