While many are embracing autumn, I’m catching the last rays of summer with a round-up of fun things to do this September in the North East…
I have to admit, I’m really not someone who looks forward to autumn, and I don’t understand those who do. I mean, the days get shorter, it’s dark and wet outside, and unlike winter, autumn has no redeeming holidays to make up for it all.
Thankfully, September in the North East is usually quite tolerable, even more so with so many cool happenings across the region.
Jeans Reborn Workshop at Friday Vintage
When: 4 September
Price: £38.62
You know I love a good workshop and this one is a great way to kick off September in the North East. You’ll learn how to cut, stitch, and design a one-of-a-kind bag. We’re talking pockets, belt loops, rips and all. No sewing experience needed, just a willingness to get creative and meet some new faces. It’s such a fun way to give your denim a second life!
Sunderland Restaurant Week
When: 6-12 September
Price: From as little as £10

One for foodies. With so many restaurants taking part this year, you will definitely want to try out at least a couple of them. I’ve heard good things about the newcomers, Low Row, with special deals available on the final day of the event, and Wildfire Pizza at Deptford, which is constantly booked thanks to its menu of delicious homemade pizzas and small plates.
Great North Run
When: 7 September
Price: Free
This year, 60,000 runners take on the iconic route from Newcastle to South Shields, and let’s be real, you don’t want to miss this iconic event.
If you’re taking part, make sure to check the official event guide for all the need-to-know info. And if you’re coming along to support, there’s a full guide so you don’t miss a moment of the action. Either way, it’s a weekend worth being part of.
Lord of the Wings at Wylam Brewery
When: 19-20 September
Price: Free entry

September in the North East also means that Wylam Brewery’s food battle is back, and this time, over 15 food vendors from all around will be fighting for the crown of the best wing. There’ll be wings to suit everyone – vegans, vegetarians, kids, and even the fussiest of eaters. Plus: live DJs, six bars, and (hopefully) some nice weather!
Ocean Film Festival
When: 25 September
Price: From £17.95
Nature and short film lovers will be thrilled to hear about this one. This September, the Playhouse in Whitley Bay will host a stunning showcase of ocean-themed short films – truly a must for anyone drawn to the sea. Expect sweeping underwater cinematography, untold stories from the deep, and a cast of surfers, divers, paddlers, and scientists who’ve devoted their lives to the water.
Yoga in Harmony at The Glasshouse
When: 27 September
Price: £22
Head to The Glasshouse this September in the North East for a yoga experience like no other. Breathe in and out to the sound of guitar played by Lesley Standbury, helping you let go of worries, stress, and anxiety, and finish September on a calmer, more peaceful note.
