Review: Sunday Lunch at Six Rooftop at Baltic

Six Baltic Review

Ending the week on a high, quite literally! I’m heading up to Six Rooftop at Baltic to review their Sunday lunch offering…

Do you know how some people associate Sundays with rest? For a very, very long time, I associated Sundays with my mum waking me up early in the morning, broom in hand, urging me to get up and clean my room.

Until the age of 18, Sundays were my dreaded cleaning days. Then, when I moved away for university, they became recovery and hangover days. Now, Sundays are for laundry and, well, good food.

So, with my laundry done early this morning, I’m now heading to Six Rooftop at Baltic to try their Sunday lunch offering. After the week I’ve had, an hour or two spent up in the sky with a friend who can make me laugh and impeccable food (or so I’ve heard) is much, much needed.

The Service at Six Baltic

When the elevator doors open, we’re greeted by smiling, extremely friendly staff who swiftly show us to our table. It’s right in the middle of all the action, with views overlooking the River Tyne. Looking around, I notice quite a few people enjoying their food, but it doesn’t feel overcrowded, which I immediately like.

One of the staff members comes over to say hello and take our coats – a small detail that’s always appreciated. I glance at my friend, and we smile at each other, a mutual confirmation that we’re off to a great start.

Six Baltic Review: Starters

Sipping on our drinks, we turn our attention to the menu. I wouldn’t call myself a picky eater, so naturally, everything sounds delightful to me. However, after much deliberation, I set my sights on the Double Baked Quicke’s Cheddar Soufflé with Balsamic Onion Confit and Double Cream. I mean, really, anything with cheese, and I’m in!

One of the staff members warns me that this dish will take around 15 minutes to arrive since it’s baked fresh, but I can wait for a good thing.

Either we’re having such a great time, or the talented chefs didn’t even need 15 minutes, because my starter arrives and it’s a sight to behold. It’s a little yellow cake topped with what looks like pickled onions, all surrounded by a warm, gooey, cheesy cream.

I don’t hesitate – I dig in. For a moment, I feel like that rat in Ratatouille when he mixes cheese with a berry and floats away. The flavour combination of my starter is truly out of this world. It’s buttery and cheesy, neither too heavy nor too light. The outside has the most perfect, slightly crunchy layer, while the inside is wonderfully soft. It’s quite simply the perfect texture.

The balsamic onion on top adds a hint of sweetness to my savory starter, along with a lovely crunch. It’s safe to say I could eat a few more of these. In fact, forget the Sunday lunch – I might just stick with this and be completely content.

Six Baltic Review: The main course

With such a strong start to my Sunday lunch experience, I expect nothing short of perfection when it comes to the main event – the reason we’re all gathered here today. But before I get to that, I should mention that I’m a newbie to the Sunday lunch club. My very first outing was only about six months ago, and even then, I somehow ended up ordering chicken, something I got teased about at work. Apparently, if you go out, you never order chicken. Too basic!

So, having learned from my mistake, Roast Beef of Yorkshire Sirloin with All the Trimmings it is.

When it arrives, the portion size never fails to impress me. It’s a lot of food for one person, but I’d never complain. With so much going on on my plate, I don’t even know where to start.

One thing I will say about Sunday lunch is that when it comes to Yorkshire pudding, I could take it or leave it. I know this might trigger some people, but I said what I said! It tastes good, but it doesn’t leave me wanting more and we’re all about honesty here, aren’t we?

Cutting a piece of my Beef Yorkshire Sirloin and mixing it with the creamy mash and broccoli, it’s a delightful bite. A comforting one. With the risk of sounding too basic, it’s a hug on a plate – and I truly needed one. I devour my meal in no time, even though the Beef Sirloin is slightly too raw for my liking but even then, I enjoy every bite.

Six Baltic Review: A coffee and a dessert

My friend is a big believer that no meal is complete without a sweet treat, so here I am, scanning the dessert menu. I land on my all-time favourite and another comforting bite of mine – Sticky Toffee Pudding with Butterscotch and Vanilla Ice Cream. This will go perfectly with my cappuccino, and truly, what a way to end our experience at Six Baltic.

When my Sticky Toffee Pudding arrives, it’s a familiar sight, and even before biting into it, I can tell it will be delicious. To no surprise, it is! It’s rich and goes down a treat with my coffee, with the Vanilla Ice Cream providing the perfect airy balance between this rather heavy dessert.

After a couple of bites, I’m full and feeling much better about the start of the new week. It’s no surprise that I opted for comforting bites this Sunday afternoon. After all, I carry deep Sunday trauma from all those years spent with a broom in hand rather than a Yorkshire pudding on my fork. But brooms no more – or not yet, at least, while I spend a couple of peaceful moments chatting away and enjoying the beautiful views at Six Baltic.

Six Baltic Review: A lovely escape

Just moments before we leave, I take a moment to observe the people around us. It’s mostly families and old friends catching up. I turn to my friend and say that Six Baltic might just be the perfect restaurant to bring your family to. It has the art downstairs, the views upstairs, delightful food, a warm atmosphere, and extremely attentive staff.

So, if you’re looking for a truly special place to bring your mum this upcoming Mother’s Day, I would not hesitate. It’s the perfect abode in the sky to leave all your worries behind and focus on what matters most – family, friends, and a chance to create memories by enjoying beautiful food together.

Sunday lunch at Six Rooftop at Baltic is £45 for three courses and £38 for two, which, in my humble and honest opinion, is worth it.
